Drifter Dave - Travel the Unknown
Канада
Добавлен 15 июл 2019
I'm a travel-obsessed Canadian who lives to explore the worlds lesser-known destinations that deserve to be discovered.
After visiting 128 countries on 6 continents so far, I have come to appreciate that some of the best experiences on Earth can be found in places far off of the tourist trail, in areas that are often overlooked by mass tourism. From West Africa to rural Cuba to the furthest reaches of the Canadian Arctic, you'll always find me discovering places that few people visit, but should!
As a former school administrator and senior high social studies teacher, I am passionate about learning as much as possible about the unique cultures and people in the areas that I visit. When I'm not travelling, I call Calgary and the Canadian Rockies my home.

Is Sydney, Nova Scotia worth visiting? (Exploring the heart of Cape Breton Island) | Canada 🇨🇦

You've probably never heard of Sydney, Nova Scotia. I can't blame you - it's remote location on its namesake harbour on the north coast of Cape Breton Island makes it one of the most hard-to-reach locations in Atlantic Canada. A long five hour drive from Halifax, this small town is technically the province’s second-largest city (now called the Cape Breton Regional Municipality), and is without ...

With only 8 hours to spare between flights, I quickly head into the city on the 747 Bus to begin my exploration. My day begins atop stunning Mont-Royal, a small vestige of the Applachian Mountains right in th...

The ruins of Bering Hill are undoubtedly the most fascinating place on the mostly abandoned island of Adak, Alaska, and exploring them was like walking back in time into the Cold War era. Here, you'll find the officer's main gym, the local movie theatre, the old Baskin Robbins (along with a few crumbling restaurants and pizza cafes), the olympic-sized pool, and the stunning Bering Hill Chapel. ...

You definitely wouldn't expect to find a McDonald's restaurant on a remote Alaskan island 1200 miles west of the city of Anchorage - an island closer to Tokyo, Japan than Seattle, Washington. The Adak McDonald's closed down back in 1993 and is very much a piece of Americana that is completely frozen in time (including its iconic drive-thru menu, featuring Jurassic Park promotional merchandise a...

In 1997, the United States Navy officially pulled out of Adak, Alaska, shuttering the remote Naval Air Base that was set up to monitor Soviet aggression during the Cold War. Today, the island sits mostly abandoned and forlorn, with only 33 residents remaining out of a former population of 6000. Dude, great fucking video! But I do hate it was short😂 My wife and and myself are planning to go that way next year on my motorcycle. Have a question ( and if I think of something else please bear with me) if I'm not able to get a cabin do you think the passenger chairs/seats will be comfortable for that 16-hour ride? And since we are coming from the US riding the motorcycle do they provide blankets and pillows on the ship? Thank you

And they got the worst slum in the world
This is like a dream trip of mine! When I finally can go I’ll be sure to book it thru them.
Definitely do it! And the sooner the better - there's talk that the Navy is going to reopen the base. It's definitely at its most fascinating right now, with so much of the island free to explore.
yo Greenlandic person here it is great you enjoyed the museum i have gone to that museum since i was about 4-5 years old up till around 18-19 years of age and alot of kids, teens, young adults and even adults go there because there is about 2-3 kindergardens 2 soon to be 3 schools and 1 high school with in a 10 - 25 minuts walk away from the museum so i really liked that you enjoyed it since it was a big part of my childhood
It is definitely an excellent museum - so fascinating! I was happy to explore it during my time in Nuuk. Really great experience.
I like to visit soon... 🎉
You should!
He dave thats 50 bucks was mine can your return them ?
Please send a stamped self-addressed return envelope with $5 CAD handling fee and I will happily mail the 50 rupees back! 😂 I'll even take your word for it!
WOW! Great Video! May I ask what it is like on Terceira if you are not a car driver? Have you been able to see how the bus networks are developed? Is it possible to experience the sights or hikes without a car?
It would be very difficult to rely on local buses, especially for off-the-beaten-path hiking and exploring. Buses travel between Praia & Angra, but schedules aren't exactly tourist-friendly. I'd say your best bet is to budget for taxis as needed, hitchhike (Terceira is very safe!) or rent a bike (or a combination of all of the above). Joining a guided tour would also be an option. To be honest, you may be better off just negotiating a hired taxi for a day or a half day - I'd estimate the cost to be approx. 50 Euros for every 3 hours - a pretty good deal if you consider you have the driver as well!
I wonder if the island ever had trees in its history
With the amount of wind that the island experiences given its location in the north Pacific, it's not likely that any tree ever naturally took up roots. But, I could be mistaken!
@@DrifterDave true, but there is at least one there. I mean, there may have been shorter species there, or at least maybe some groves on the leeward sides of the hills, you know? Or maybe they got wiped off the map by glaciers, literally.
Rubbish only America ansd imperialist puppets see Che as a threat . Che is loved by many socially minded people that are sick of the yankee oppression and the yankee wars
Che is long-dead so I'm sure no one sees him as a threat. But, the West definitely sees communist ideology as a negative force in the world. You're allowed to disagree, though!
How many hrs is your layover?I have 7hrs layover this August do you think i can go out and enjoy my layover?
I had exactly one day between flights to explore Copenhagen. In 7 hours, you'd be able to see quite a bit. I'd center your attention around the Royal Palace area and dip over to Nyhavn to see the colours. I'd say you could spend about 4 hours in Copenhagen, plus transport time and giving yourself a buffer for airport check-in/security.

Please what is the cost of living like in prince Rupert?
Pretty well everywhere in Canada is facing a cost of living crisis. I'd encourage you to visit sites like Rentfaster.ca to assess the average rent, etc. I'd estimate about $100-150 per person per week for food.
Thanks dude

@@DrifterDave lol, I’m booked to take the train to Prince Rupert during the fall colours. Now trying to find affordable Accommidation…. Love a challenge!
Looks like an absolute shit hole. Well done for being so positive.
I try my best to be as positive as possible - sometimes it can be difficult! Djibouti definitely was a stretch 😂
One of the ugliest towns I’ve seen.
There are definitely some older parts, but plenty of beautiful spots as well. You've gotta wonder just how much Prince Rupert would boom if Trudeau allowed the pipeline to be built. That would be a massive boon to their economy.
Real shame about the weather! The view from the top of Kärnan is just great - overlooking the water and the Danish Kronborg castle, which is also worth a visit.
I'd love to visit the Kronborg at some point! Despite being a bit gloomy and overcast, I definitely enjoyed my visit to Helsingborg!
I was guarding "The Pound" in 84 and 85. We didn't call them the 7 doors of doom back then. We wouldn't let anyone get near that place. The Reaction Force Facility and entrance guard tower were completely rebuilt in 84 and 85. The only time we could get a glimpse inside of the bunkers was when they had to transfer a weapon from a bunker to the maintenance building on the right at you enter, and then they would roll them back to the bunker. We would line the front of the bunker with a big U formation of Marines standing shoulder to shoulder, with weapons of course. We would hot bunk in the RFF for 3 days on and have 3 days off if I remember correctly. The lowest post at the Compound was the Tundra patrol and you would wander the tundra around the complex within about a mile at the most, being sent from checkpoint to checkpoint. That post was really tough during white-outs. We did have orders to shoot anyone who crossed the outside perimeter fence. Literally no one was authorized in that zone so the assumption was it could only be a bad guy. At about 6:45 was the space that the Marines lived in while contractors rebuilt the RFF and Guard Tower. That was a miserable time in there. The one "office" looking area in the RFF was the Alarm Control Center (ACC) and was the top post at the Compound. The C.O.G. hut was the space for the Corporals of the Guard. The large room with the whiteboard and the weightlifting logo was the "classroom". There were some weights for working out and you would clean weapons there like the .50 cal Browning. Great tour, thanks.
Amazing, thank you for sharing your first-hand experiences. Such an amazing piece of history, and it was really amazing to explore a place that was once so far off limits that it just amounted to a surreal experience for me. Definitely appreciate the expert insight, and taking the time to explain what I was looking at. Thank you for your service!
Hi Dave - thanks for the review. I have stayed at 10+ hotels in Cayo Santa Maria over the years. This hotel was probably the least favourable. For the first time in 20 years I experienced towel theft. I think the food was a bit above, and the beautiful cigar bar (best kept secret) made my stay a little special. Another perk is the independent walk up grill restaurant by the pools, which you do have to reserve at the restaurant itself in advance for lunch, and there may be a line up, but it’s worth the wait. You can get lobster (when available) priced at market. I’m not sure why booking agents rate it so highly, 4 star maybe, but not 4.5 IMO. I highly recommend Melia hotels on this Cayo.
I will definitely check out the Melia next time - though, I had a few fellow travellers share with me that they were also hugely impacted by the shortages in Cuba. Some of the folks on my tour reported that the Melia ran out of beer, that the buffet was scarce, and that it was a disappointment. I hope that it improves (and that it improves for all resorts). I would definitely visit the Playa Cayo Santa Maria again as it wasn't a terrible experience, but as you said, by no means "4.5 stars". Thank you for sharing your experiences and advice as well!

Which cruise did you go with?
I used Disko Bay Explorer for the sightseeing cruise around Disko Bay. They are pricey, but have a decent level of service. It was roughly $100 USD for the 90 minute trip.
How can i travel there. I live in Paris. Is france land. ??
Yes! It is an Overseas Department of France. You can reach it direct from Paris on Air Saint-Pierre. airsaintpierre.com/en/
@@DrifterDave iits not canada there ??
No, it is part of the French Republic. They use the Euro, and you must pass through France border and get the France entry stamp. It is not associated with Canada, but there is a ferry connection to Canada (90 minutes).
@@DrifterDave My friend. Which is the city. Of Canada. Goes the ferry. ?
The ferry connects the village of Fortune, Newfoundland & Labrador with the islands of Saint-Pierre et Miquelon. The nearest Canadian city is St. John's, Newfoundland, 5 hours by road from the ferry terminal.
Wow! literally a drive down memory lane at time marker 1:08 (its off the second time i watched) Your rental is right next door to the house I use to live in in the 9th and 10th grade in high school (Bob Reeve H.S. 1976-78).. I'm glad I was able to bring back some great memories for you! Thanks for checking out the video 😎 You should definitely take a trip back to Adak in the near future!
I wish you would have talked about the hotel a bit more.
The Seven Crown wasn’t a sponsor of the video, so I was limited in the amount that I could include without venturing into the realm of free promotion. I found the hotel basic but comfortable enough! Similar to a Ramada / Days Inn in North America - not luxurious, but not uncomfortable. Standard budget to midrange hotel, in my experience 👍 Great restaurant, though!
@@DrifterDave thanks Dave. We are looking to travel there, but it was not as easy to find a decent hotel there compared to say Cabo or Huatulco.
That's completely fair. This is something that the local tourism board is aware of, and they're hoping for some international investment for hotel chains like Hilton, etc. to open properties here. To be honest, I'm not sure why the big chains continue to neglect La Paz. It objectively has WAY more to see and do than Cabo, yet Cabo gets all the love (and luxury). Hopefully within ten years, La Paz will see some new midrange to high end properties. I'd still suggest that you visit - try for an AirBNB, you might find something a lot more comfortable than the local hotels.
I was a Navy Brat there in the early 80s. So many good memories. The Pool, bowling, roller skating, fishing at Finger Bay with my Pops. He was in the EOD. CWO3 Ted Varnell. God I miss him & the island so so much.
Amazing! I hope the video was able to bring back some memories for you. I’m sure it was a pretty vibrant place to live back during is heyday. Thanks for sharing your story!

Hey hey!! dont tell everyone our hidden secrets... haha Its a paradise I love to go in the summer, its my 3rd trip 🙂 The beaches are amazing , close to the type you would see in Mexico, (old harry, Sandy hook), the food is great and people are amazing and very friendly. If you want to stay in the peak time of tourism, plan way ahead if your not a camping person (easier to find spots). Its not very very hot and windy so perfect to be outside without getting cooked in a microwave... For people that love wind sports (kite board) you will be in heaven.
